Cold Weather, Hot Drinks

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Here in Pittsburgh we’ve enjoyed a rather mild Fall/Winter – up until now!  But don’t let this cold weather drag you down – make the best of it.  There’s nothing better than curling up on the coach with a good movie and a nice, hot drink to warm you up.  Here’s some amazing cold weather drink recipes from Fine Living that will get keep you “toasty” on a cold, winter night:

Hot Spiked Cider – Apple brandy gives this cider a tasty kick! You’ll need 2 quarts apple cider, 2 cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks and 4 shots apple brandy. Heat cider with cloves and cinnamon then pour a shot of apple brandy into a mug and fill with cider.

Hot Buttered Rum – Takes some work to create, but it’s definitely worth it!  You’ll need dark brown sugar, unsalted butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, spiced rum and cinnamon sticks.  Beat together the brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg cloves and a pinch of salt until smooth.  Add rum and two cups of boiling water and stir until and stir until mixture dissolves.  Pour the rum into a mug a mug and a cinnamon stick for decoration!

Cranberry Hot Toddies – A cold-weather favorite!  You’ll need tangerines, cloves, cranberry juice, sugar and amber rum. Cut your tangerines crosswise (about 1/4 inch thick), remove seeds and stud the rind with cloves.  Simmer your cranberry juice, tangerine rounds and sugar for five minutes covered and then add rum.  Serve with tangerine rounds in mugs.

Nutty Irishman – Simple, yet delicious and good any time of year!  Just mix together Frangelico liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream and some of your favorite coffee and top with whipped cream!

Vanilla Hot Chocolate Seduction – Nothing says winter like hot chocolate, so try this adult-version of this classic.  Grab some milk, vanilla syrup, salt, vanilla bean, white chocolate, white chocolate liqueur, Triple Sec and, if you’re feeling fancy, some marshmallows for toppers. Heat your milk, syrup and salt in a saucepan – do not boil.  Split the vanilla bean in half, remove the seeds and add them to the pan.  Add white chocolate and mix until melted.  Finally, stir in your liqueurs, pour into glasses and add your marshmallows!
